This years event was held to support The Rainbow Centre (one of R&M’s chosen charities to support throughout 2012 through the 1 2 3 Decathlon Challenge) and the Romsey Branch of Parkinson’s UK and raised in excess of £5,000!
The event was held at the prestigious Romsey Golf Club and was the 25th successful Pro-Am Golf Day to be held by the Southampton AM Connect Rotary Club.

On a bright sunny day, The Rose Road Association was delighted to welcome Bruce Elkins and his Olympic Torch to the Bradbury Centre, where there was a great turnout of families and supporters from Wessex Cancer Trust, Rainbow Centre and Rose Road to welcome him!
Bruce Elkins, Finance Director at CW Fellowes Limited; also known as the co- founder of the 123 Decathlon Challenge was selected to run with the torch through the streets of Southampton, after being nominated for all his dedication and hard work in numerous sporting events and raising money for charities over the past 22 years; in addition to establishing the New Forest Children’s Triathlon 11 years ago, which has encouraged more than 2500 children to take part.
Over 100 people visited to see the torch, meet Bruce and have their picture taken with a piece of sporting history – joining in with the fantastic celebrations!
With the grand opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics just days away, there is still plenty of time for you to get involved with the Decathlon Challenge, which up to now has raised over £50,000 – an amazing achievement, but we are only half way towards our goal of raising £100,000 so now is a great time to show your support and sign up.
The next event is our wonderful athletics in September, kindly sponsored by Peter Cooper Volkswagen Group, where you can take part in the 200m, 800m, long jump and shot putt – plus our fantastic 5k fun run around Southampton Sports Centre after the athletics event, generously being sponsored by Radcliffe & Co, Independent Financial Advisers – giving you the chance to raise money for three great local charities whilst becoming your very own Olympic champion!

R&M Cables entered a team for the WaterAid charity 5 a side tournament organised by Nomenca for Wessex Water.
Despite the blatant use of a number of “ringers” R&M Cables clearly did not utilise the same calibre ringer as the other teams – who on examination had a large number of local semi-pros playing for them! (It was rumoured that one player had been on Chelsea’s books!).
“The company were well represented and we are very happy with the “mid table” result – and no wooden spoon! It has been great to participate in this event, our thanks go out to everyone (especially all the Dave’s) that gave up their time for such a worthwhile cause” commented Andrew Baggott (Director)
WaterAid is an international nongovernmental organisation, whose mission is to transform lives by improving access to safe water, hygiene and sanitation in the world’s poorest communities.
WaterAid uses practical solutions to provide clean water, safe sanitation and hygiene education to the world’s poorest people and now work in 27 countries in Africa, Asia, the Pacific region and Central America.

R&M are pleased to announce that over 60 members of its staff and relations took part in the Walking Leg of the 123 Decathlon, held on the 25th of March at Manor Farm Country Park, near Southampton. R&M employees walked 1000 km in total managing to raise over £12,500 in the process!
Held on one of the few days of summer everyone had a great day and despite a few (well quite a few!) blisters everyone managed to complete their chosen course – whether it was the 5 kilometre family friendly course or the more challenging 20 kilometre course, having fun and raising money at the same time.
R&M would like to thank all of its employees for taking part in this event and to everyone who sponsored them and would specifically like to mention Marc Shortridge – the manager from R&M’s Southampton Branch – who managed to raise a whopping £1,500 in sponsorship money winning the prize of a meal for two at the renowned “Hotel Terravina” in the New forest. Marc managed to complete the 20km course and I believe still has the scars to prove it!
The 123 Decathlon Challenge aims to raise £100,000 for local charities – The Rainbow Centre, Wessex Cancer Trust and The Rose Road Association through a series of 10 sporting events to celebrate the 2012 Olympic Year.
With already 4 events under their belts The 123 Decathlon has so far raised over £45,000 towards its ultimate goal, with the next challenging event being the Triathlon held on July 1st.

R&M Fixings and Supports Director – Steve Cargill – is taking on the gigantic challenge of joining the “Saints Big Bike Challenge” on the 9th of April next year (Easter Monday), involving a 85 cycle ride from St Mary’s Stadium, Southampton, to Selhurst Park – the home of Crystal Palace, to coincide with a 3pm kick off!
“As anyone who knows me will tell you, I am not world renowned for my fitness regime! But being a life-long supporter of Saints this cause is one that is very close to my heart and I am really looking forward to the challenge – saddle sores and all! I am looking to raise a whopping £1,000, so any donations, large or small are gratefully received through my Just Giving page” Steve Cargill (Director).
The cycle ride is in support of registered charities “The Saints Foundation” and their official partner “Help the Hospices”. Funds raised will directly support the operational costs of the Saints Education Centre, set up by the Saints Foundation to improve the education of young people in Southampton through literacy, numeracy and IT syllabus which supports the National Curriculum.
Funds raised will also support local hospices; Naomi House and the Countess Mountbatten Hospice Charity. From Physiotherapy and pain relief to a listening ear and home cooked meal, your local hospice does whatever it can to help seriously ill young people and adults in the local area to live well until they die. Hospice care is free for everyone who needs it, but is not free to provide.
Saints Foundation Ambassador Iwan Thomas is fully behind the event; “I would recommend the Big Bike Challenge as a great way to get fit and raise funds for three worthwhile causes. I’m aware of the great work of Saints Foundation and the two local Hospices make a huge impact to people’s lives at a difficult time for those involved. Good luck to everyone who takes part and let’s raise plenty of money!”
